In 1997, I founded Fresh Piks, an organic food delivery service based in Victoria, BC. For two years I worked 12–16 hour days, often seven days a week. I was sacrificing sleep, recreation and relationships to keep up with an endless to–do list and a steady barrage of problems. The best way to describe my life back then was definitely "a grind" — like many entrepreneurs I was working too hard for too little return.

There had to be a better way, and part of me knew it.

The ultimate adventure in life is the journey toward your dreams. As an entrepreneur, this is what business is.

In my former career as an outdoor guide, I spent my days leading wilderness trips throughout British Columbia. I wanted to get back to that sense of freedom and adventure — and to making progress the way I did on my journeys in the backcountry.

Once I realized that business and adventure were not that far apart, I started applying the elements of outdoor adventure to my life at Fresh Piks. Each time I did, I was surprised and pleased: things got easier. My stress level gradually sank and my productivity increased.

I knew I was on to something!

Over the next five years, I reshaped my entire approach to business.

By combining the principles of adventure with the day–to–day realities of building a company, I was able to reach my entrepreneurial dream. When I started Fresh Piks I was doing 23 deliveries a week. By 2003 it was a household name, a million–dollar business, and the #1 organic delivery service on Vancouver Island serving 12,000 Victoria residents. I sold the company that spring.

After a long break, I reflected on my time at Fresh Piks and over two decades of business courses and personal development programs. I spent three years refining my adventurous approach into a polished success system. Trailblazer Business Adventures is the culmination of my journey building a million–dollar company and discovering an entirely new way for entrepreneurs — business as a path of adventure.
